The rapid advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, such as Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), presents a transformative opportunity for nursing education and research. This webinar, moderated by Dr. Suzanne Bakken, will delve into the multifaceted applications, benefits, and challenges of incorporating generative AI into nursing. Our distinguished panelists will comprehensively explore the current landscape and future directions in leveraging these technologies to enhance nursing education and research. Firstly, Dr. Maxim Topaz will define what generative is and explore the integration of generative AI, highlighting its benefits for enhancing student assignments, creating realistic patient scenarios, and boosting research productivity. He will also discuss academic integrity and misinformation challenges associated with AI, and recommend strategies for responsible AI use to improve educational outcomes and research efficiency. Dr. Meghan Reading Turchioe will follow with a focused examination of ChatGPT's application within a nursing graduate course, presenting a practical use case of generative AI in educational settings. Supported by a grant from Columbia University, Drs. Bakken and Turchioe incorporated into the curriculum both a broad foundation of generative AI in healthcare and the specific use of ChatGPT to support students learning statistical programming and data science. Dr. Meghan Reading will present the curriculum as well as empirical data on the students’ learning outcomes and competencies, and lessons learned from the experience. The goal of their presentation will be to provide actionable insights for educators interested in incorporating similar technologies into their teaching practices. Lastly, Dr. Maryam Zolnoori will explore the applications of generative AI in nursing research. Her presentation will cover groundbreaking ways in which generative AI can be used to extract insights from clinical notes and patient reports and to generate synthetic research data, offering a significant leap forward in nursing research methodology. Dr. Zolnoori will share insights from her work on data synthetics, risk prediction, and diagnostic algorithms, illustrating how generative AI enhances nursing knowledge and patient care. Through straightforward examples, she will link these advancements to the efficiency and potential of generative AI in refining nursing research practices.
Together, these presentations will offer a holistic view of generative AI's current and potential impacts on nursing education and research, providing attendees with valuable knowledge and practical strategies for integrating these technologies into their teaching and research. The goal of this webinar is to foster a deeper understanding of the transformative potential of generative AI in nursing, encouraging innovation and responsible adoption in the field.
Intended Audience: This webinar is designed for nurse educators, nursing researchers, and healthcare professionals interested in AI, and students in the nursing and health informatics fields, aiming to inspire and guide the integration of generative AI in nursing practice and academia.
